THE WORLD OF CHILDREN

Warlamis loved children.

This love of his had a deep and substantial content. He believed that we adults can learn a lot from children and their world, while on the other hand we must protect the world of childhood as the most precious substance that secures our future.

A large part of his artistic creation refers to children and an equally large part of his artistic creation is inspired by the world of childhood.

But he himself, as a person, maintained throughout his life the elements that characterize childhood, his enthusiasm for creation, humor, and a kind approach to human relationships.

In a methodical way, he tried throughout his life to convey these elements to his direct collaborators with whom he made this enormous and multifaceted artistic work.

Warlamis’ “CHILDREN’S WORLD” includes state actions, books, design and architectural works, while his famous method of learning design for young and old opened new perspectives on a global level. The Museum that he founded and directed while he lived in the city of Schrems, Austria, continues today with his assistants to have an educational orientation and an important cycle of pedagogical actions.

he himself writes...

But what is this world of children? What is its theory, its values? And then how does one approach this world? I am referring of course to a relatively unknown culture, to a pre-state culture in whose center is hidden the most precious good: The good of Childhood. The good that can accompany man throughout his life, if he manages to secure it in an intelligent way. Unfortunately, the so-called adulthood makes man move away from humor, from poetic spontaneity, from the unexpected and the random and above all from being able to admire until the end, to participate enthusiastically in the miracle of life. In the eyes of children, all the material values of adults, everything they “seriously” piled up and filled their homes, become meteors, have wings and lose their functionality in the game of imagination. And the colors and shapes of imagination have a sweetness that, never, ever, can bring the “real”, the “heavy”, the “serious” that are evaluated within the formalism and typology of mechanistic and materialistic perception. The solution that remains is the approach to this pre-state culture of childhood, which is at the same time the conception of the hope of the future. Return to childhood, the hope of the future I am referring to the first substantial formation of the human personality, which is essentially defined in childhood. Support in children's philosophy is defined by a very delicate system of behavior and love. Parents, guardians, that is, adults, must lower themselves enough to these small beings and begin to learn from them the essence of life, the immense admiration for all phenomena. However, the time required is also needed for the child to reconcile with his own scientific method, play. And play is not only about fun, but also about the child's penetration into the immediate environment of the city, into history and the social whole. Unfortunately, in our time, neither time exists, nor respect for this weak culture of children. Children's toys are dwindling, the lively neighborhood is disappearing, peers are becoming fewer, and children are forced to survive with an unrealistic perception of life that results in the great disease of the era, narcissism, that is, the inability of man to communicate with others, that is, individualism with its so destructive impact. In the best-case scenario, we must begin a reverse movement that will secure children's human rights. Their safety from the frenzied mass media and most importantly: by promoting the game of imagination and creation. This return to children, above all else, will ensure us adults a greater flexibility in body and spirit. By playing with children, we will be given the opportunity to reconnect our own childhood - which is in essence the divine element within us - with the new generations, with the future. If I am proud of anything, it is only because I managed to keep throughout my life this secret that the Egyptian priests very kindly revealed to Solon: You Greeks are always children.
