APOSTLE PAUL (2016)

Warlamis had a special relationship with the Apostle Paul, which began with his hometown of Veria, which the Apostle to the Nations repeatedly visited, as well as with the personality and struggle of the Apostle for the Christianization of our homeland and the entire Western World.

His personal relationship also with the then Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Blessed Christodoulos, with our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and with Pope Benedict played an important role in creating the large cycle of works on the life and work of the Apostle Paul.

For the permanent presentation of the collection, he even designed an amazing cave space, the “Crypt of the Apostle Paul”, where the visitor could “experience” the presence of the great Apostle. The art collection includes 68 paintings.

The primary image of him (the Apostle Paul) in my mind has no photographic characteristics, but I must nevertheless capture his form and give it back to people. Although I do not start from a specific type in my studies of physiognomy, the image that I have kept in my soul since I was a small child appears at the end…

I am sure that you are opening a door for many people to meet the Apostle of the Nations again. Your great projects – the Crypt in your own homeland of Veria and “The Journey of Paul” – I am sure require a lot of strength, but they are new guidelines for the message of Saint Paul…

The presence and preaching of the Apostle Paul in Veria, the homeland of the internationally renowned artist, makes him give a more personal character to this particular collection, as through its works he revives his personal relationship with the honored apostle but also the apostle’s relationship with the Macedonian Veria that hosted him, when he arrived here persecuted from Thessaloniki, and eagerly accepted his word.

…what makes Professor Warlamis’ work on the Apostle Paul even more important is its developmental dimension and specifically the formation of a high-value tourist product that can change the economic and social perspective of our country, since it is addressed to the entire Christian world and especially to the youth. It is the pre-sanctuary pilgrimage route “In the Steps of the Apostle Paul in Macedonia”, the largest religious tourism project planned in our country and the exhibition of Warlamis at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki marks its first official presentation.

Collection presentation

The collection was presented at the Pavleion Cultural Center in Veria (2013) and, upon the invitation of the emeritus Pope Benedict, at the Basilica of St. Paul in Rome (2014). In 2016, it was presented at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki.
