THE TOWER OF ALEXANDER IN EDESSA
What is this tower?
In 1995, the Mayor and the Municipal Council of Edessa asked Warlamis to implement his idea for the “Tower of Alexander the Great” in plans.
In October 1996, after a year of work, the plans and models for the “TOWER OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT” were presented at the City Hall of Edessa. The project was placed under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Mr. Kostis Stefanopoulos, who also inaugurated the Exhibition.
The text of the Mayor of Edessa, Mr. Vosnakis, which was voted unanimously by the City Council, states:
With the decision of the City Council of Edessa to honor Alexander the Great by building a Tower dedicated to his ever-present spirit, we are creating a NEWS for the whole world, which declares vitality, peace, hope and opens an intercultural dialogue, assuring the world of the historical continuity and kinship of modern Greece with ancient Greece.
The Municipality undertook to implement the project, however, omissions in the licensing process and archaeological obstacles prevented its implementation.
he himself writes…
The Tower of Alexander the Great becomes a symbol of the survival of Hellenism with a complex design and perspective. The project will act, reproduce and enrich the identity of Edessa, Macedonia, Greece, Europe. This architectural ensemble belongs to the category of active buildings that are among the world's sights. A project with this character means that it touches the dreams and desires of people, is in continuous action of sustainable production, connects the future of the city with a creative production. It is a project that has the ambition to respond to the impetuous challenge of nature and to provide a counterweight to human creation worthy of the grandeur of the waterfalls of Edessa.
